Baking Soda Teeth Whitening
 11/3/2008  by

A bright smile does something to everyone's confidence and self esteem.  It is a great tool to help you feeling better about yourself and possibly allow you to do more than you would have if you didn't have white teeth and a nice smile.  This has led to many people pursuing teeth whitening.

Teeth Whitening has become a very popular thing recently.  Those that wish to keep their smiles looking great have turned to baking soda teeth whitening systems with pretty positive results.  This has led to an increase in brighter smiles and an overall better outlook on your personal appearance.  What most people don't know is that using baking soda on its own outside of a packaged product is actually unhealthy for your teeth and should not be used.

Many people know that baking soda is a common ingredient in toothpaste, thus leading them to believe that baking soda teeth whitening is an effective way to shine up their smiles and brighten their faces.  However, while whitening your teeth in general can do all these things, one fact about baking soda teeth whitening is often overlooked, the fact that it can in fact damage your teeth and lead to tooth decay.

Although baking soda is used in toothpaste, it is used in a very low concentrated version, as opposed to baking soda teeth whitening, where you apply pure baking soda to the teeth.  Many people in fact use baking soda teeth whitening by adding a bit of water or hydrogen peroxide to baking soda and plastering it on their teeth.  This can be very dangerous to your teeth because if used as frequently as toothpaste the baking soda will eat through your enamel.

Since your enamel protects your teeth, using baking soda teeth whitening on a regular basis will destroy the protective layer and encourage tooth decay.  Thus, if you use baking soda teeth whitening every week you could actually be destroying your tooth which is counteractive to your efforts of building a healthy smile.  Your teeth simply cannot handle that much baking soda in one application used regularly, even if at first you may see whiter teeth as the result.

However, if you continue to insist that baking soda teeth whitening is safe or that you will not spend the money on another teeth whitening product, then you should only use this method a maximum of two times a month.  When used in moderation, baking soda teeth whitening can be safe, but because it is such a common and easily found method, many people misuse the convenience.

Baking Soda Teeth Whitening if not used within a packaged product could in fact be detrimental to healthy teeth and smile.  An unhealthy amount of Baking Soda is usually used if you try to use it on your own.  The recommendation is that you should purchase a valid baking soda teeth whitening product as opposed to using it as a direct application.
